Dr. Maya Angelou Dies at Age 86

Renowned American poet, novelist and civil rights activist Dr. Maya Angelou has died at age 86. According to media sources, the legendary author and activist died at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on Wednesday morning, May 28. 

Dr. Maya Angelou was a remarkable artist and inspiration to many. Her autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, published in 1969 was one of her many best known powerful and poetic works that has touched the hearts and changed the minds of all those who read it. 

A statement from Dr. Maya Angelou’s family read:

...She lived a life as a teacher, activist, artist and human being. She was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace. The family is extremely appreciative of the time we had with her and we know that she is looking down upon us with love.
